Your everyday riding kit should earn its place. Start with the route, the weather and what you would do if you could not ride home. Then choose equipment that fits your bike and is easy to use.

See and be seen

For riding at night, the Highway Code requires lit white front and red rear lights, a red rear reflector, and amber pedal reflectors on bikes manufactured after 1 October 1985. Check that bags and clothing do not cover them. On unlit roads, consider whether your front light lets you see the surface ahead as well as making you visible.

Choose a correctly sized, securely fastened cycle helmet. Reflective items can improve visibility in the dark. Read the Highway Code’s rules for cyclists for the full guidance.

Have a plan for parking

Choose a lock for the places you leave the bike and check any requirements in your insurance policy. Practise using it before you need it. Think about which parts are removable and how you will secure them.

Carry the things that get you home

A compatible pump, tyre levers and the correct spare tube can be useful if you know how to use them. Tubeless systems need their own approach. Ask us to check compatibility rather than buying by appearance alone. Carry a charged phone and think about a backup journey if a repair is beyond you.

Give the bike a quick check

Before setting off, look for tyre damage, confirm the tyres are inflated within the applicable tyre and rim limits, check that both brakes operate, and make sure the wheels and other parts are secured according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use your bike’s manual for its specific checks.

A new noise, loose part or change in braking is a reason to stop and investigate. If you are unsure whether the bike is safe, arrange a workshop check before riding.

Make carrying things comfortable

For regular trips, ask about a compatible rack, bag or mudguards. Keep loose straps and clothing clear of wheels and the drivetrain. A little preparation makes the next ride easier to start.

Ask about equipment or arrange a bike check.
