An e-bike can make hills, headwinds and longer journeys feel more manageable. Choosing one still starts with the same questions as any bike: where will you ride, what position feels comfortable and where will you keep it?
Understand the assistance
In Great Britain, a compliant electrically assisted pedal cycle must have working pedals, a motor with a continuous rated output of no more than 250 watts, and motor assistance that cuts out above 15.5mph. Riders must be at least 14. A compliant EAPC does not need a driving licence, registration, vehicle tax or compulsory motor insurance. Throttle-operated bikes can have additional approval requirements.
These are limits on electric assistance, not a promise of cruising speed. Check the exact bike against the current government rules. Changing a system to exceed the limits can change its legal status.
Think about a whole week of riding
Describe your longest regular journey, the hills and what you carry. Treat any advertised range as a guide to discuss, not a guaranteed distance for your route. Ask what affects the range of that model and how you will recharge between journeys.
Check storage before purchase
Can you move the bike through your doorway and lift it if needed? Is the battery removable, and can you handle it comfortably? Ask about the charging arrangement, replacement battery availability and support for the motor system.
Make safe charging a habit
Use the supplied charger or a manufacturer-authorised replacement and follow the instructions. Charge while you are awake and at home, away from exits and combustible materials. Let a hot battery cool first, and do not cover it while charging.
Do not use or charge a damaged battery. Bulging, leaking, unusual smells or excessive heat need urgent attention. If it smokes or catches fire, get out, stay out and call 999. Read the government battery safety guide.
